Pursuing Holiness: Enter Lolo Jones

Pursuing holiness opens the door for intimacy with the Lord and joy inexpressible. By nature it is costly on some levels. Holy living sets anyone apart, which means being different and thereby a target for derision and misunderstanding. This came out with talk about the praying NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, and it has recently made news with who might well be the female counterpart to Tebow—Lolo Jones. An Iowa native, Miss Jones is a 29-year old world class track star and Olympian who spoke out about being a virgin. On twitter she said, ―Yes I’m a virgin. . . I do so to honor God & future husband.‖ She explained in a TV interview this week, ―It’s just something, a gift that I want to give to my husband. But please understand this journey has been hard. If there’s virgins out there, I just want to let them know, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics, harder than graduating from college, has been to stay a virgin before marriage.‖ “I’ve been tempted. I’ve had guys tell me, they’re like, ‘Hey you know if you have sex it will help you run faster,’ ” Jones joked. Her response? “If you marry me, then yeah.”

Miss Jones takes it all in stride with quite a bit of humor, but her childhood was not so humorous. She grew up in deep poverty, more than once being homeless. Her parents were never married, and her father spent more than half his life in prison. Miss Jones has seen many hurdles, but has proven herself as an inspirational runner. This is especially so for those of us in the Christian race set before us (Hebrews 12). LH
